How to Get to Ilha Grande
There are no bridges to Ilha Grande — every visitor arrives by boat. Here is how to reach the island from Rio de Janeiro, and which port to choose.
First, get to the coast
All boats to Ilha Grande leave from the Costa Verde, the stretch of coast southwest of Rio de Janeiro. From the city of Rio it is roughly a 2 to 3-hour drive (about 150 km) to the departure ports. You can drive, take an intercity bus (Costa Verde line), or book a private transfer — many combine road transport and the boat ticket in one package.
The three departure ports
Conceição de Jacareí — the quickest crossing
This small port has the shortest sea crossing (roughly 30–50 minutes by schooner or fast boat) and the most frequent departures, which makes it the most popular option for independent travellers. It is also the closest port when coming from Rio.
Angra dos Reis — the main hub
The town of Angra dos Reis is the largest gateway, with the widest range of services and departures. The CCR Barcas ferry takes about 1 hour 20 minutes and is the cheapest option; faster catamarans and schooners do the trip in around 50 minutes. Angra is well connected by bus from Rio.
Mangaratiba — from the north
Mangaratiba, closer to Rio on the northern side of the bay, also has a CCR Barcas ferry (around 1h30). Departures are less frequent, so check the timetable in advance.
Ferry or fast boat?
The ferry (balsa/barca) is the cheapest and most stable crossing but the slowest, with fixed daily departure times. Fast boats and schooners (lanchas and escunas) are quicker and run more often, at a higher price. In high season and on holidays, book ahead — boats fill up.
On arrival
Boats dock at Vila do Abraão, the island’s main village. Remember there are no cars: from the pier you continue on foot to your pousada, or take a boat-taxi to beaches further away. Pack light, in a bag you can carry over uneven paths.
Practical tips
- Book return boats in advance during summer and long weekends.
- Bring cash — ATMs on the island are limited.
- Watch the weather: rough seas can delay or cancel crossings.
- Leave your car in a guarded lot at the mainland port; cars cannot go to the island.
