Where to Stay in Ilha Grande

There are no cars and no big resort chains on Ilha Grande. Most lodging is family-run pousadas, alongside hostels and a few campsites, ranging from simple and cheap to boutique and charming. The vast majority of visitors base themselves in Vila do Abraão, the island’s only real village.

Vila do Abraão — the obvious base

This is where the boats arrive and where you will find the widest choice of pousadas, plus the restaurants, tour agencies, shops and the island’s modest nightlife. Almost every boat trip and trail starts here, and everything is walkable. The trade-off is that it is also the busiest and liveliest spot — worth knowing if you want total quiet.

Quieter alternatives

For more nature and fewer people, look at the smaller communities such as Aventureiro, Araçatiba, Praia Vermelha, Enseada das Estrelas or the calm northern bays (Japariz, Freguesia de Santana). These have far fewer services, and many pousadas there are reached only by boat — the owners usually arrange the transfer for you.

Booking tips

• Book early for December–March, New Year, Carnival and long weekends, when the best pousadas fill up.
• Check the location — how far it is from the pier and whether it sits on a beach or up a hill.
• Remote pousadas: confirm the boat transfer, its cost and times, before you book.
• Pack light — with no cars you carry your bags over sand and uneven paths; ask if the pousada offers a luggage service.
• Confirm the details: breakfast included, air-conditioning vs. fan, Wi-Fi, and payment (cash or Pix is often preferred).
